Street Food Seoul: Episode 1 - DESSERT
Street food is my absolute favorite kind of food, whether its an empanada in Argentina, a green onion pancake in Taiwan, or what is quickly becoming a new favorite, cinnamon and brown sugar filled pastry in South Korea.  Other than hot dogs and halal food in New York City, the US lacks a big street food culture. But in Asia, especially in cities, it thrives. People are busy here. And there are a...

sometimes funny things happen when you live abroad. like when you go to the drugstore to buy body wash. and everything is in korean. so you just grab the cheapest, big bottle. and you get home and it smells like limes. so now you gotta walk around smelling like a margarita for six months.  true story, friends.

Feeling Heartbreak from 5,000 Miles Away
After a silly night out of drinks, dancing, and fast food, I woke up on Saturday, and like always, checked the news. And my heart sank. Information was pouring in about an elementary school shooting in CT. In America. In my home country. I was in Taiwan during the Aurora shootings, and my heart broke. But my heart has shattered while reading the stories of the small children and brave teachers...

I've Got a Deep Soul, apparently
Fortune tellers, palm readers, and tarot card readers are very common in Korea. They have street stands, booth in malls, and stores in popular shopping districts. Couples often visit them before marriage or when they become pregnant. Sometimes, the readers even choose the name of a couple’s child. So, naturally, James and I had to try it. (Don’t worry, Mom. I’m not pregnant or...

5 Days
until my semester abroad ends. I honestly can’t believe how quickly time to going by and I really just need it to stop for a little while. Stop. Just stop. I’m freaking out that I may never see my host family again or some of my American friends.  My core course had a end of the year dinner on Tuesday night after our exam. It was the saddest party I’ve ever been to. The 30+...

Hello My Fellow Wanderlust Beauties! Just wanted to let you know that Krista and I have added pages to the side of our blog with posts tagged by country.  You can now easily find information about Denmark, Ireland, Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan. So, if your planning a trip or daydreaming about a certain place, go for a scroll (like “go for a ‘stroll’”...

Hygge
pronounced “hooga” is a Danish word that cannot be translated into any other language. It calls to mind friendship, coziness, warmth, comfort, love, etc. Wikipedia describes it as “relaxing with good friends or loved ones, often while enjoying good food and something to drink or creating a more friendly atmosphere by lighting a few candles. Christmas time, when loved ones sit...

It's December 2nd
and I leave Denmark in 16 days! In that time, I have to write 3 papers and take 2 exams. I also want to see some more castles, go to Tivoli again, check out some Christmas markets, see the Little Mermaid statue, and explore some more churches - not to mention spend as much time with my host family and friends as possible.  So what am I feeling right now? A little stressed, but mainly a mixture of...

The Van Gogh Museum
is a MUST SEE in Amsterdam. It was the host to my best museum experience - a life changing one. Standing in the presence of so many magnificent works of art at one time was the most overwhelming sense of awe I have ever felt. The way Van Gogh used color is convey meaning is a marvel only understood when viewing the development of his original artwork through this museum. I am art illiterate, but...

When You're Not Home for the Holidays: A Tale of...
Thanksgiving 2010: I ate a mango for lunch. It was sandy because its hard to cut a mango on the beach. I was in Chile, on the last leg of a South American backpacking trip with my friend, Nigam. It was my first holiday away from home, and it was easy. I posted a psuedo-sad facebook status. Something like, “missing mashed potatoes while watching the pacific crash into the shore.” I was...

Danish Fitness
So…I decided to join a gym for three reasons. 1) My diet in Denmark and during my travels has not been exceptionally pleasing for my body. 2) I like working out and I thought it would make me feel more like a live here. 3) In comparison to most Danes, my fitness level is nonexistence.  As I’ve indicated, (virtually) every Dane is in excellent shape. First of all, most Danes bike to...

Oh yeah...
I went to the gym in Denmark for the second time today. I hadn’t lifted since early August, so I knew I wouldn’t be in the best shape of my life. However, I was actually horrified when I realized how little I could lift. 12 lbs on my shoulders was feeling like a bit of a struggle. Then just as I was beginning to panic, my brain started working again and I realized the weights were in...

Danish Halloween!
Halloween is a fairly new phenomenon in Denmark. In the last five years or so the Danes have started to bring some American Halloween traditions into practice. They already have a holiday in February when children dress up and go from house to house collecting money, so trick-or-treating isn’t very popular here. Instead, the Danes have decided to make pumpkins the center of their Halloween...

I just got back from Ireland, and...
If I could be an old man anywhere, it would be Galway, Ireland! I could read my newspaper while I sip on an Irish coffee in the local pub, and no one would bat an eyelash. Then as the evening rolled in, I might grab some fish and chips with my good friend, Guinness, and walk across the street to another pub (without changing or showering). There, I could get a little sloppy and hit on the young...

It is 11pm, and I’m in my apartment like a grandma. But, I’ve already heard two people vomiting, one on the street and one through the walls of my apartment. Happy Friday night in Seoul. Enjoy your soju.
